Ash Wednesday is three days hence. The following is something I wrote about three years ago. It is putting me in the frame of mind I need to have. Maybe it will help you as well.
Receiving ashes has been a very popular devotion among Catholics for as long as I can remember. In recent years, even some non-Catholic Christians have started observing Ash Wednesday! Lenten spirituality prepares us for celebrating Easter. This preparation focuses on three disciplines: prayer, fasting, and alms giving. It is these practices that help us overcome sinful habits and spiritual weaknesses that draw us away from God. They help us battle temptations. It’s a good time now to think and to pray about specific practices to adopt during the Lenten season.
Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner!
